Despite its long line of successful BlackBerry products, Research In Motion also had its share of failed touchscreen phones in the not-too-distant past. So, before you entirely dismiss RIM's latest slider touch phone, the Blackberry Torch 9800, better check out what's in store for you. RIM learns from its mistakes and you'll be surprised at what you'll see.
Best of both worlds
Touchscreen Vga
After spending some time at the drawing board, RIM combined their industry-acclaimed physical QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen technology to come up with a new smartphone which delivers what they call "the best of both worlds".
The Torch runs the new BlackBerry 6 Operating System, the first complete operating system overhaul undergone by BlackBerry since iPhone and Android made a big splash in the industry.
Being North America's reigning champion in the smartphone market, this marks RIM's first title defense against the BlackBerry clones and wannabees inundating the market.
What's new on the Torch
The Torch's new appearance is a clear-cut departure from the recognisable BlackBerry form factor we've been accustomed to. RIM's new Blackberry Torch 9800 is actually smaller than the past versions you're so familiar with. It measures a leaner 111 x 62 x 14.6 mm and weighs in at 161 grams. The Torch sports a 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen with a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels.
What makes the Torch more outstanding is the fact that it is a slider phone. The touchscreen display slides up expose the physical QWERTY keyboard underneath. The touchscreen and BlackBerry's renowned keyboard - you get them both in the Torch.
The Torch share some features with the BlackBerry 9700. However, the Torch is the first of many RIM mobile devices to run the beefed-up and enhanced BlackBerry 6 Operating System. RIM's new OS provides context-sensitive menus for wider choices, the new WebKit browser with faster and more efficient performance, SNS integration so updates of different social networking sites can be accomplished on a single screen, improved multimedia capability, and Universal Search which broadens your search option.
High-end power features
The Blackberry Torch 9800 is powered by a 624 MHz Marvel mobile processor beating under the hood. Connectivity is provided by Class 10 GPRS / EDGE international phone coverage and quad band GSM on 2G as well as HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 /800 on 3G coverage. The phone is also equipped with a GPS receiver with A-GPS support. Wi-Fi provides added network coverage whilst Bluetooth with A2DP and microUSB offer wireless and wired data transfers and syncing, respectively.
For users who want to preserve special moments in pictures, the built-in 5 megapixel digital camera with 2592Ñ...1944 pixels resolution certainly won't disappoint. The autofocus camera has features such as LED flash, geo-tagging, continuous auto-focus and image stabilisation. The camera is also capable of recording VGA-quality video.
Besides a new and improved operating system, the Blackberry Torch 9800 has RIM's extensive experience and technological innovations in wireless communication behind it. Every phone that rolls off its factory is guaranteed to deliver the richest user experience.
